Fishing Traps

Postby Scilly_guy » Sat Mar 08, 2014 12:27 pm

So I thought it was about time we had a thread to figure out how traps actually work, what determines the rate and type of fish you catch.

I had been catching shiny spinners, trunk nosed lake perch, Gold Pickerel using wood choppings at about 20%, the trap was in a lake.
I have now moved and I am catching Tiger trout and Ghostly white fish in a different lake with wood choppings, early indications suggest 20% is still a possibility.

I think it must take about 30 minutes for the trap to tick and the bait will be taken on a last in first out basis.

I hypothesize that location determines what you catch and bait determines how much you catch.

Good to know. (And FYI, all containers are stacks on the server. This comes in handy when doing crafting and such.)

Devs pretty much told us this when they reworked fishing a while back, although what you catch on rod and reel may differ from what you catch in the trap.

The time between each chance of catching a fish seems randomized from my experience. Either that or it's dependent upon the type of bait you are using. Bones seem to take much longer to disappear than meat shreds for example.

Ah ok, I was basing my guess on little evidence, I haven't been as thorough as I would like... yet.

I missed that in the patch notes, maybe this thread isn't worth it?

Don't misinterpret what I say here. It has been quite a while since these little tidbits came out. I certainly don't expect anyone to go back and reread everything and commit it to memory. ;) A good listing of what can catch which fish would be very useful, though if one item catches one fish on node A, but catches two other fish on node B, it may not be as helpful as if it was a 1:1 relationship. Someone can correct me if my memory is bad on this one, but I seem to recall jorb or loftar one mentioning that the nodes can move, too, or something like that. (At least, they could potentially deplete for some hours if overfished.)

At worst, we could get some charts going if people could be honest in reporting what catches which fish and at least say "Bait A catches fish B approximately 80% of the time".

Tbh I dont thnk there is differentiation of bait, I have caught all the fish in the wiki with mainly berries, grass, waxing mushies, witches hats, crickets, lavender blewits, chestnuts, acorns, the leaves from the acorn bushes, (for some reason maple leaves dont work), and lilypad bulbs.

Location is really important though, when placed in the ocean, catches vary dramtically from placing it in a lake, and when placed in a river. Bait does not come out as first in last out or any combination of those words, it is almost random, and not per type of bait as far as I can tell.. I can fill my trap with berries and have 2-3 different fish, then fill my trap with wood choppings and get 3-4 different types of fish, HOWEVER, I have notcied the gluttony modifiers from the fish include forage etc. are these changed with the type of bait used?

You mean you can get 3-4 fish from 15 wood choppings?
Or that wood choppings allow you to catch 3-4 types of fish, without specyfing how many fish you get for how many choppings.
Yesterday I built my first fish trap and after filling it with wood choppings and returning some hours later I got an empty trap, and after refilling and few more hours I got a single fish

I filled mine with wood choppings a few times (when foraging has been poor or more important for other use), I typically get 2-3 fish per batch, unless there has been only 1 (on ocassion), the fish are of different types.

However usually I fill the trap with a variety of bait, pretty much anything I find lying around, I get a good catch of fish of differing variety.. and as dallane says, there are nodes, if you arent catching much, move it to a different location and you may catch more
