Science Says You're Probably an Jerk IRL (jk)

I've heard this aruguement a few times on this forums, not sure I put much stock in it, but thought I'd share anyway.
Virtual avatars may impact real-world behavior

“Our results indicate that just five minutes of role-play in virtual environments as either a hero or villain can easily cause people to reward or punish anonymous strangers,” says lead researcher Gunwoo Yoon of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

As Yoon and co-author Patrick Vargas note, virtual environments afford people the opportunity to take on identities and experience circumstances that they otherwise can’t in real life, providing “a vehicle for observation, imitation, and modeling.”

They wondered whether these virtual experiences — specifically, the experiences of taking on heroic or villainous avatars — might carry over into everyday behavior.

The researchers recruited 194 undergraduates to participate in two supposedly unrelated studies. The participants were randomly assigned to play as Superman (a heroic avatar), Voldemort (a villainous avatar), or a circle (a neutral avatar). They played a game for 5 minutes in which they, as their avatars, were tasked with fighting enemies. Then, in a presumably unrelated study, they participated in a blind taste test. They were asked to taste and then give either chocolate or chili sauce to a future participant. They were told to pour the chosen food item into a plastic dish and that the future participant would consume all of the food provided.

The results were revealing: Participants who played as Superman poured, on average, nearly twice as much chocolate as chili sauce for the “future participant.” And they poured significantly more chocolate than those who played as either of the other avatars.

Participants who played as Voldemort, on the other hand, poured out nearly twice as much of the spicy chili sauce than they did chocolate, and they poured significantly more chili sauce compared to the other participants.

Internet announcement from 1995: People take things they read on the Internet out of context and/or way too seriously.

Not really, thor. I got your sarcasm. (Not sure who else may or may not have.) I'm more referring to the attitude I seem to be reading about this study from the OP, or: Learn 2 science?

Let me break it down: the study says, that, initially, the behavior in games influence how one treats others shortly afterwards. It doesn't mean that you immediately become a total *****, though. As with any repeated behavior, it will slowly become habit. To make an example, if you're a ***** in a game all the time but are a nice guy in life, if you don't do anything to balance your attitudes, you will slowly turn into a *****.

A totally unrelated, but somehow identical example: You know how your parents (or somebody) told you not to frown all the time or your face would get stuck that way? Come to find out, the muscles get trained into a certain position, so you look like your scowling or frowning all the time if you don't smile often enough.

All I get from this is that all of them, including the scientists, are *****. Wheres the spicy chili sauce with chocolate in it option? Mole Poblano is delicious.

Yeah, perhaps I should have given this post the more accurate of Science Says There is a Statisical Probability That In the Moments Directly After Playing a Video Game You will Be Influenced by the Moral views of your Character.

I posted the study just because I wanted to see people's reactions. Personally I think it's BS and the reason is that they aren't really testing characters that the players create and thus the actions a person personally chooses but rather how people respond to culturally known icons of good morals and bad morals. Everyone knows how superman acts and everyone knows how voledemort acts, consciously or subconsciously. It was a study of the influence of culural icons and not video games. I think this study would have zero implications on Salem because all characters and actions are self created, which is part of the Beauty of this game.

Also for those who were confused the study using avatar in the place of saying character, they don't mean that little picture by your name in forums.

It's a general problem in behavioral sciences, I think. It's what draws people to and drives people away from the field (and professionals).

Forgive me if I'm being a bit dry here. I just get annoyed by people that take these sorts of studies and takes them to an extreme that has little to do with the research going on. It's like saying "eating a candy bar" and "makes you obese" without any qualifiers in between and assuming that it's ONE candy bar.
