I've looked at wurm but while it looks like fun I'm highly discouraged to play it with the need to get premium to be able to experience the full feel of the game. Or at least that what it told me when I booted the game up for the first time yesterday waiting for it to download.

well, i used to play wurm before salem. some people complain about the grind in salem, but let me tell you when i started salem after having played wurm, one of the bestest things was how vastly much less grindy it is. the grinding is salem is also much less boring imho. wurm's terraforming is definitely very awesome though. i wish we could have that in salem but it wouldn't work out.

This.

it's grindy to a point where you can't only play this game. You need to read a book. Or talk with other people. Or watch television.
When I played it it was like this: book open on the table, or some comics / articles open in another tab. Queue 3 actions in Wurm, read book / comics for 20-40 seconds, requeue 3 actions in Wurm and so on.
Most of the time in Wurm you will either see some wall or ground while you repeat same action over and over.

So grinding is a problem... Good opportunity to play Salem and Wurm at the same time!

Beside the grinding, is there any other issue with Wurm? Is the system solid? Is the community alive and well?

I bareley played it. The graphics are offputting and I could not locate a place to settle. Houses all over the place.

The community is pretty good, most people are friendly.

And the grind is not the problem here. It's the fact that game requires your attention for 5 seconds every other 30 seconds. And you can't just issue order to make 20 boards. You have to manually click for every single board.

In Salem we have lime boulders. It takes like 10 seconds to mine one and you have to mine them one by one. Then you can manually break one into lime stones. In Wurm whole game is like this.

I like the game and overall it is still one of the best sandboxes out there, however it is also the most expensive and cost more than many premium games. It takes a long time to build up a character there, although there isn't permadeath, getting killed on a raid could still set you back depending on how high your skills and equipment lost could set you back a long time. oh, won't be for long though. I wouldn't advise anyone getting involved with the game as soon it'll be completely obsolete in comparison of what is coming out soon, also they're bunch greedy sobs running it not only charge you a high rate for premium member ship but an even high rate for building a town, costing as much as 60 bucks per month for a good size town. So..., Salem it is :)
