Voxel games, the trend?

Postby thl111 » Thu Jul 04, 2013 6:48 am

I just found out about Dwarf Fortress and am kicking myself for not doing it long before. Then I google for some similar style game and here are some names I've gathered so far. All are in Alpha or Beta phase though.
Stonehearth http://stonehearth.net/
Timber and Stone http://www.timberandstonegame.com/ This one looks a bit like minecraft, also has 1st person view option where you control a subject of your kingdom and interact with the world.
Gnomoria, you can find this game on Steam. So far, it is the closest to DF.
I don't advertise these games, just thought for those DF fans out there, you might like to try these out.

Quite many of the people i've meet on roanoke is playing DF :)
Also Don't starve is a game that some is playing, it's only single players, but it is a good game because the developers make some awesome patches, unlike other games

Yeah there are a ton of really great games like this. Rogue likes are also starting to get more popular.

Terraria was fun for maybe one day :P After that I had achieved everything.
Though that was long ago, maybe it's been updated.

Tried a bit of Towns. Can't say I really like it. Last game in DF, I settled in cold climate and at early stage, forgot to get water and haven't appointed any milker lol. My dwarves pissed off en masse lol.

Terraria is no longer updated, for like 2 years now. Its dev is working in Starbound team now. Nevertheless, those games aren't really about achieving everything, but about building, surviving and having fun.

-Starforge
-Planet Explorer
-7 Days To Die (FPS survival sandbox..)
-Astral Terra (I'm also working on a voxel-based sandbox/crafting game with the same engine which will be released in 20 years)

I love dwarf fortress, awesome game. It's still at v0.34.11 for more than a year now though.
The best thing about it is, that you can do almost anything, there was a guy who build a turing complete computer with registers using water pipes and pressure plates.
Or a guy who hollowed out the whole giant mountain and build a city withing.

If you like complex and challenging games try out nethack. It's an old rpg, but you can do almost everything in it (and may have to to survive).
