Some random guy walked up when I was killing a rabbit... he started getting in my way... and it made it difficult to fight it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it there are plenty more bunnies out there to kill, an better things things to 'steal'. Technically the bunnie is ffa until is in your inventory or in your claim. Just remember in future be sure the check if there's anyone close by when you land the killing blow.

Or you can just learn some combat skills, rights of the englishman, and punch him in the face.

It's an option, not a good one (leaves scents and a summonable one if you ko him, which might have been what he was hoping for actually), but an option.
