Advise on walls please

Postby ysbryd » Tue Feb 19, 2013 9:33 am

I know there are some pretty big players out there, so I was wondering if I could pick your brains for a sec.

The established wisdom seems to be three walls, because braziers kick in after three crime events etc.. but wouldn't four walls be better? Then after the three crimes they would still have to stand there and knock down the fourth? And spacing of braziers? I know they range 21? tiles, but thats for minimum coverage.. how many to be pretty safe from casual griefers?

Not looking to make a fortress, I'm a bit part player in this, just want to wander around and craft a bit as a hermit, without too much griefing, ie have a base that is reasonable secure unless I really piss someone off.

Hope I get some constructive answers before I start building my permanent base.
Thanks in advance

Due to the new splash damage concept the idea of having 3 adjacent walls is probably not reasonable anymore (please read the announcements for the concept and its implications discusison).
However, since this new concept has some flaws as well, I would assume that there are further changes ahead.

Braziers kick-in on the first crime now. Multiple walls is not only more resources and work but may be redundant and do nothing because of splash damage.

In my opinion you want them as dense as possible. Have them every 3 or 4 tiles so that they can support each other and really punish that invader. If someone drops a waste claim then increase brazier density and keep them all fresh and full.

Cheers Tech, its always nice to see a Haven vet in a new place.
Glad about the wall thing, they are so damn ugly.
So, one wall, a million braziers lol, okay, at least I know whats facing me now.
Read through the entire update thread, and was still a little confused as to what was actually needed.. so *written in language the subormal can understand* really helped.
Oh and eventually a town bell.... dang... or should that be ding... or ****...

Multiple walls still work just fine if they have some distance between them [5+ tiles?]. 2-4 spaced out walls should be enough if you're not looking for problems.

Would be fun to see what others thought when building their base, here are some of my thoughts.
I have never been good at planning and building and i think if someone really wants to raid u bad enough they will.
anyway i did this half fail rough sketch once when we built a town.
we made spaced out walls of 3 tiles for easy repairs and was happy about the splash dmg untill i noticed it jumped 50 squares.
i think splash dmg travel 4-5 tiles, not sure on that one.
basic idea was going nuts with braziers covering the walls if someone bash em.
Center braziers cover 3 inner walls, brazier wall cover next 2 walls, and groups cover their own part of outer walls.
To be honest i have no idea how to build a good base and we have done alot of changes here and there but in the end the only way to improve is to be raided over and over again

Nice idea, only one major problem
With that many braziers where the hell do I put stuff?

I'm supposed to actually live in there somewhere *chuckles* but thanks for the input

And yeah, i'm looking to be secure from casual raiders, I dont intend to upset anyone and dont use any crimes.

Looks like it would have to be an awfully big base if those groups on the outside contain 50 braziers. Maybe instead of just spamming braziers everywhere, you should try to set it up to get the maximum use out of each brazier.
