Topia Online

Postby painhertz » Fri Dec 14, 2012 12:30 am

So... a couple weeks ago I go to the Haven forums to see what's poppin and there's a thread by a guy who's designing a game and he wanted people to take a look. Initially I was like "Ok, let's go see what crap this guy is coding." Once I looked it over and read some of the features, it became obvious to me that this game is going to kick some ass....

It's going to have the "now" usual Open Pvp, perma-death sandbox approach but where it gets interesting is that all creatures, monsters, etc are player controlled. If you fight and kill a Giant Spider? You just killed someones character. All monsters are players and all have unique ways of advancing. In addition, the game uses a simple scripting language so the behaviors of hirelings, machines, magic can be modified and made to do what "you" want them to do as long as you have the knowledge and resources to fuel the script. I'm really not very well "written" so in no way am I doing this game justice.

They just put up their Kickstarter and Beta will begin in January so check out the links.....

I support this fully. I backed them $25 and I encourage anyone else to do the same. We need more sandbox games out there so that bigger names will start picking them up aswell.

I still don't really like the whole "you can edit the game any way you want to" thing but we'll see how it works out when it actually starts to be playable.

who knew spaming every forum multiple times would get so much interest!

This is the ****** game with a massive P2W model and full bot support right?

Yep, that's the one.
I feel like we'll all spend most of our time dying and opening our wallets for the most part but it could still be fun, who knows.

Pay 2 win model? Where the hell did you get that idea? At least bother reading about it before you start talking ****.

Well to back the project $50 you get 5 character slots. These can be used as free respawnable hirelings which I could see as a problem.

BUT. After talking with Josh in IRC he says extra character slots will be around $1 or up to a maximum of $5 depending on how it goes.
Assuming it's $5 ea and it's $25 to get into beta for sure through the kickstarter, it all works out. In fact, if it's any less than $5 per slot you're actually spending more through the kickstarter so it's not exactly an advantage.

Yeah, truth be told, there is no MMORPG in the world where you cannot get more characters by buying more accounts. So in this regard, every game is play-to-win because you can buy tons of accounts and have tons of characters. =)

Anyway, we've offset this by allowing players to just obtain 'hirelings' in the game, so there is no need to buy more accounts or slots.

I think you might have misunderstood what the character slots are for. Anyone can have as many hirelings as they can control knowledge/resource wise... I think the extra slots are to try using different character/monsters.....

I like the graphics, they are charming.

The whole game feels unrealistic though. With their incredibly low budget and huge goals I get the feeling it won't live up to expectations.

But to be honest I'd love to see it succeed purely to have more sandbox games in the market.
I never managed to figure out something clever for my signature on Paradoxplaza, and I doubt I'll do it here either.
