These kind of people will most likely be the ones funding the game with real money. As long as they buy silver, I don't think anybody cares if they quit or not.

Eh? I reckon Paradox cares a lot whether people quit or not. Or do you believe that people buy silver after they quit playing the game?

Buy silver and quit = profit.

Buy silver, get wtfpwned, buy more silver = profit.

If they were to get so far established that they have their own massive silver income then that would be bad.

How is having a large silver income bad for the Player?
(see what I did there? I know you meant bad for the devs in reality)

However no game will ever have even a small measure of success without players. Players leaving is NOT good for either the publisher OR the remaining population, no matter if they ever bought silver or not. It's just not good in any way, hence the name of this thread, see it? : "Why are there so few people playing the game?". Right now the answer to that question is mostly because the game is not finished in many ways, nor is it in an "open" state. But once it is open and mostly finished, believe me, having an attitude of not caring if the population dwindles is not one that the publisher will be happy with. They probably also won't be too happy with Mods who share that opinion, I would imagine.

It's a niche game. There is a certain demand for a game like this, and there isn't much supply. So why not stick to this untapped market rather than compete against established games in a more mass-oriented market? This is what Paradox usually does. Simplifying Hearts of Iron would've alienated the hardcore sim crowd, but the game wouldn't have enough bells and whistles to make it in the mainstream RTS market.

I always wondered how Salem is going to be monetized. Guess this explains it. Lure the players in with false advertising (crafting mmo anyone?), make them buy silver, make them quit.

We must commend Paradox for this novel business plan. It's a rip-off scheme even EA would be proud of.

PS: Dallane, stop being so retarded. If you can. $200 / month Salem is making atm means LOSING money, not making a profit.

There is no legitimate way to play the game, you can be hermit, or be in a village. You can raid other players or hunt criminals. You can be peaceful and helpful to other players, but you still have to consider defense and that someone might raid you. or kill you (lets be honest, it is really hard to get killed as a person who commits no crimes.. if you are careful, so don't fall for chiefs noob scalping festivals.) You are making that sound so black and white. you cant really seperate the two aspects of the game from each other. The reason people might be touchy about this topic is that this same discussion has been in H&H for a long time.

Maybe my mistake is reading these forums, but I was under the impression that it was very easy to get killed as a person who commits no crimes. The posts make it sound as though griefing is rampant and anyone who, while exploring the world, has the misfortune of running into a PvP player who just had a fight with his/her/its girl/boy/thing friend is likely to be left not only penniless, but dead.
