This thread is getting abit old, so sorry for bumping it. Above a link to a article that i think describes the events pretty well.

Here is also a TED talk about it.

He leaked government secrets, broke the law, breached his contract, more then likely cause the loss of said contract along with his fellow employees. I doubt that company will have much of a chance with any contacts above NIPRNET access now.

By leaking he exposed tons of information to US enemies that will more then likely be used against us along with other countries down the road. Our IT infrastructure around the world is insanely unsecured, even more now.

Was the NSA doing some shady stuff? Depends on who you ask, but there are channels he can go through to address and fix issues instead of leaking and running like a *****. Being a contractor doesn't make you powerless to changes.

One thing that will come of this is that all classified info is going to be locked up tighter then all ***** along with people working for the gov in IT will need to get more ***** certs and keep up with them all at the same time.

I don't really see how he had any other choise. If i personally went to America and started asking "the wrong" questions. I would probably be locked up for good pretty fast.
And as i have understood the goverment doesn't need a reason to detain someone for as long as they like. If something is inconvenient to them it gets taken out of the way pretty fast.

There is a ton of stuff that is ***** up in your country. The majority of the rest of the world knew that even before Snowden released his information. NSA stuff is just the tip of the iceberg.

You will probably have a civil war at your hands soon, i do hope that it doesn't come to that. But i think the future looks very dark for you. Maybe you should open your eyes.

I am personally troubled of what is becoming of America, and i am not even it's citizen. I am very suprised that you don't even raise a eyebrow to question the actions of your own goverment.

It is scary and we're one dirty bomb and a right wing-nut job president away from a military state. Our police are already some of the most militarized in the world with the military transferring massive amounts of excess equipment to them.

We won't have a revolution or civil war. Progressive politicians are already on the rise. We'll continue having this growing divide between the two sides of the political spectrum. Fortunately the right wing in this country is shrinking and is only able to maintain a part in national politics by creating laws to suppress the votes of Democratic voters and by creating hyper-partisan gerrymandered voting districts for local and congressional elections. Eventually those will fail and we'll see more and more left-wing politicians fighting the corporate libertarians like we saw this fall. Virginia is now a moderate left wing state. North Carolina is now a swing state. Georgia and Texas's Hispanic populations are growing and those states which used to be hard right guarantees are voting more and more Democratic and are close to being swing states. When that happens you'll see a change in Presidential politics further to the Left and with it changes in the US military and the NSA.

He leaked that the government and the NSA was breaking the law and the Constitution according to the Federal appellate court of the US Judiciary. He broke the law to show the world that the NSA was breaking the law here and in almost every country in the world. He breached his contract to take a stand for the independence of the internet. The company he worked for is huge and won't be losing much in the way of contracts. They're basically the Haliburton of Intel contracting.

The Senate Intel committee has determined that although he released massive amounts of infrastructure secrets about the NSA, he hasn't released any specific information that has harmed any specific US interests or programs. Our IT infrastructure is much more protected than any other countries and something like 90% of all internet traffic goes through US companies or US lines of communication.

He attempted to go to higher levels to question what was going on for years. After that he decided to do what he did.

The NSA and CIA can't start a rollback of classified info. They need to expand their programs to cover a changing world and they're hiring massive amounts of tech savvy people just like Snowden. They might try and clean up their employees and contractors security clearances but they'll have a tough time hiring if they start to exclude to many people. Currently over 4 million people in the USA are cleared for classified info up to 'Secret' and over a million are cleared for 'Top Secret'.. They can't control that many people if they need them.

Yep, it's quite scary.

I am glad to hear that it looks like it's getting better. I'm looking forward to see what will happen.

I guess the only thing that i can do to help is to spread awareness of it.
