Bit of a +1 for a big urban project:

http://ronfinley.com/

Mr. Finley just did a TED talk on May 4 about urban farming. This isn't the first discussion or news on the subject, but it's probably the most noteworthy, and the broadest, encouraging whole neighborhoods and cities to take up the subject of using free space for food cultivation.

Wow. Looks a bit more ambitious than my "project". Since last report there have been events, but I have been busy playing Salem so I havent had time documenting the progress.

Since last time I have planted a hedge with Amelanchier alnifolia. They are supposed to produce berries/fruits that are edible and tastes like blue berry. I originally wanted a blueberry hedge, but it would perhaps provide much coverage.
The cloves never got very big, and I did not have time to wait for them. Instead I resorted to cow dung compost and mixed it in.

Pre-sowing in a box was not a success. The onions became small strands of "grass" that withered and most died. A couple of them is in the "field", but my hopes are not high. I sowed peas, onions and sallad right into the field. We will see what comes out of this. Pictures will be taken if anything noteworthy comes out of this.

Got a good laugh out of that. It's still a shame that there's so much truth in what he says though. To a large extent, people are a product of their own environment.

But then I love this stuff, probably because it was a large part of my life when I was a kid. Unfortunately in life we tend to gravitate towards the concrete jungle, but I'm looking forward to the great escape :p

I bet there is some stuff you can make in Lappland. Check out your local garden shop.

Ok, I will post some pictures. Only problem now is that it looks weird to the neighbours if I take pictures of my "field". The weather has been decent lately
so the neighbours are more often outside.

Why would it be weird? :D

Just seems futile to farm for 2 months :) That's how long summer in here is..

But yeah, some people do farm strawberries and blueberry bushes. Carrots, potatoes etc.
But something like an apple tree won't survive here :\ or anything "exotic".

Due to popular demand I hereby post the following images:

Image
The field as it is now. Dominated by weeds.

Image
The auto-watering unit. I have forgotten what I put in it. It was raided by my youngest son and carrots were added by accident by said son.
The largest leafs are probably spinach.

Image
Can you spot the pea plant?

Image
Salad, I think..

Image
The carrots that was preplanted in milk cartons. Too densely planted. I will cull them soon.

Image
Tomatoes

Image
Tomatoes and various herbs.

Image
Basil
