Back in Pre-Com beta I ran the only Raiding faction who were... neurotic enough to stay interested despite much less content than we even have now? Good enough description. However, Paradox allowed a bunch of those beta slots to go to people of the paradox forums. If you know paradox, they tend to put out a lot of non-pvp games, so the community is by and large carebearish and friendly.

Then comes Haveners. Even the "nicer" haveners are much nastier than anything the paradox could dredge up. There was massive splits in the community in the carebear vs raider debate. And carebears fought the only way they could since they couldn't and/or wouldn't fight on the field of battle and death. They made up huge nasty forum posts about us and called us intense numbers of names. Even chief would have been proud of the rage my group and I managed to incite in them. I took forum "figurehead" of the pro-raider community and got incredible amounts of flak for it. Reality was were taking on notoriety for the actions of all raiders, even if we were a fairly large portion of it at the time.

One of the debates that was raised in the ensuing forum wars was the use of the word "carebear" to be considered discriminatory and deragatory. Several members of the pro-carebear group moved to get it banned from the forums (it was tossed out, but they tried). Meanwhile they had been flagrantly abusing us verbally (anything considered to be "non-respectful" was fully against the rules) and one of the more endearing lines was calling all raiders "anti social psychopaths". The fact that I am unwell with a mental disease (of which I talk about freely) was brought up and smeared everywhere as to why I was being a megalomaniac tyrant.

To be fair though. We were raiding and/or killing more or less everyone. Defenses were laughable and being the only real active raiders left at the time there wasn't any opposition. I was also playing devil's advocate to the extreme due to the utter lack of pro-pvp sentiment on the forums. I got to play king for a while too, and that's always fun. Have to say though, credits to my fighters for everything. I tried to be the voice of reason, caretaker of the base and forum persona, but the Knights of Peterville were truly the villains of that story:

Zero, Renard the Fox, Max, Macyo, Bait, Dallane, and TTT. (By order of recruitment, for there is no measure to compare them as they were all good friends)

Kellirit was also working the base with me, and poor moxi who died in the counter raid by the early world goons (since apparently we'd been robbing them blind and the fighters just hadn't told me).

Honestly I figured someone would be around from those time and recognize the reference. I guess Dallane hasn't seen this yet :P
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

To be honest i'll do what i want. I'm a nice guy in real life but i don't have to be a nice guy ingame. I tend to gravitate towards what seems lacking. If the game is dominated by griefers then i will strive to protect carebears. If the game contains no raiders then i will raid. I'm not some kind of gaming druid though. If some playstyle looks fun and interesting i'll play it.

I'm a nice guy in real life because I can vent in my games. Girl is giving me ****... time to go gank a noob... yes, honey. I'll be to bed in a few minutes.

I'm not usually aggressive but I wouldn't really consider myself "friendly" either. My policy when it comes to neighbors is pretty simple: let me do my thing and I'll let you do your thing, just don't start creeping your place closer and closer to mine. If I can see my neighbor's place on the mini map while I'm standing around at my place, we're going to have issues, especially if they start going crazy stripping the areas resources as well. I just moved to a new spot because of that exact scenario combined with a sudden build up of newbie camps all over the place. So far I'm on good terms with my new neighbors and our camps are a good distance from each other. We've started a trade relationship and that's always a welcome thing. I try to coexist with my neighbors as long as they show an equal amount of respect towards me.

As far as snagging unclaimed and unprotected stuff, I will always nose through things like that and take anything that is useful to me. If it's nothing I want, I just leave it and move on. I am still building up my farmer right now but sooner or later I'll probably end up with a petty thief alt. I'm lazy so I don't usually bother breaking into places but if I were to come across a claim with no defenses or an unclaimed place with holes in the walls, I'd definitely go see if there were things worth pillaging. When I started playing H&H during world 5, I lived near an abandoned village. I looted that place constantly and got all of my starter seeds for my farm up there. That place was a gold mine for a newbie.

You forgot about "poopsockers" Sevenless!

Still, I think it's wrong to split people up in groups when it comes to Salem. There are so many types of players that in the end you either play a reflection of your own personality or roleplay someone else --- which is still probably a believable person.

In that way splitting people into groups in Salem is just like doing it in real life, which results in a retarded amount of categories and subcategories into the infinite.

Yet, I still voted.

I steal stuff that is unclaimed if it doesn't look like a noob that is just getting started and have no issues with robbing inactive claims blind. Got me killed last world though.

Also, I think there are more "less upfront-aggressive" players in Salem than raiders, murderers and rangers.
I never managed to figure out something clever for my signature on Paradoxplaza, and I doubt I'll do it here either.

Yes, exactly Moo. There are too many variables for this type of poll to be truly successful.

I go with a mix of role play and real life personality, personally. I mean, look at it this way. Would I break into someones place in real life, even if it were abandoned, and take their stuff? No. In Salem, however, I am more than happy to. I do leave the camps alone that look like they belong to other 'noobs' (while I did manage to get Larceny on a character, I still fully consider myself to be a noob. I mean, I'm still under 20 in biles. Finding a mine to provide myself with iron bars has been problematic, and finding enough feathers and snake skins to purchase the amount of nails needed to build even a Hovel has been, as well.).

And I do it fully knowing that one of these days that seemingly abandoned claim is actually active and the owner is going to come after me with pitchfork and torches in hand. That, though, is part of the allure of Salem.
