The people I talk to in game I met simply because either we happened to settle next door to each other, or I met them through trade. I would say that is quite natural community :). Also the forums are here for a reason and should really be considered part of the game, you should be able to find people to play with here.

Progress isn't instant, but the fact that you think its sensible that you are idling tells me you don't have a clue what you're doing. Instead of idling in your base, why don't you go out and craft/gather the next set of inspirationals or kill some crickets for silver so you can get a farm/mine up? Or build your base, list goes on. The great thing about the inspirational system is that you can do the stuff you want to do while getting skills, and it seems like for whatever reason you have totally missed that...

Having said that, a game in which progressing is not trivially easy is not for everyone, so uhh.. bye.

Over 7 months of playing this game now, and I've never ran into this mandatory idling problem you are talking about.

As for meeting people, well, thats what the forums are for. Or you could just go explore, and risk running into hostiles instead of friendlies. That is alot of fun as well.

And guess what? Even with a high level inspiration in your inventory, you have to spam inspirations to raise a particular profiency as there is a cap of 500 on each one. As for using gluttony and having a farm etc to pump ou food to feed this, that is all end game, and while i played with several other people, there was no global chat and the experience was quite lonely. Communities cannot form or come together naturally as they would in another game, I had to stalk boston to find people and then often would find it difficult to play with them as people woud not have access to settle, so we were constantly walking. All in all this doesnt feel particularly different from smurf village (the 2d graphics are at least better in that), a game i bought for my baby nephew.

let me suggest you to read stickies in Help section, especially this.

but maybe you are better off playing something else with your baby nephew. gl

I also think you need to read this to get more of a grasp on what the game is about:

You are twisting my words, i did not say idling was sensible, i said it was the horrible result of having to wait 5 mins + before being able to learn new skills. I wasnt 'idle' in the sense i was stood still, would infact go gathering, but it till counts as idling to me as i wasnt able to play the game in any meaningful way during that time. Forums cannot be considered part of a game. You must be deluded.

As for the other person, i am sorry i critisized your game, i dont play much with my baby nephew, excuse me for having better overall expections from a game that was designed in 2012. The currency monetization of this game i imagine will attract a community of obsessive compulsives who are willing to feed hours and hours into a game that has no real challenge, it is a shame people defend games like this. You probably have invested months of work into this, so i understand.

If Salem was the worst game I ever played...I don't think I would be going to the community forums to complain about it after I decided that it was the worst game ever.

Well, maybe if I had to pay for it I might do that but...

Salem is FREE to play.

Waiting 5 minutes for new skills is such a problem now? This is a game played over weeks and months, not a flash game for 2 hours. If you played for a bit longer you would see that you can actually learn all skills pretty fast, and that gathering enough inspirationals and building your place will take much more time.

In case you are not aware - the more BB you have, the faster you study. Right now It takes max 2 minutes for me to raise stock & cultivars from 80 to 81.

Also, please cut down this sarcastic political rhetorics...
People defend this game, because they find it fun. If you are going to bash them and call them names for liking something you can't then all I can say is that you are very close-minded, to say the least.

Hell, it's 2012 and people still love and play games like dwarf fortress, transport tycoon or runescape.
