you must have never played a game that did not suck and have nothing but monotone modern age themepark titles under your belt then. it used to be every game had staff closely intertwined in the community, this is how roleplayer guilds in UO got little cosmetic doodads, how developers were enshrined in secret eq locations, how aradune (brad mcquaid) led the first dragon raids against vox and nagafen, how kerwyn the rogue was immortalized with an npc copy of his character when he passed away irl in vanguard and the reason we have a dunce hat in salem called claeyts hat. furthermore if you think claeyt himself does not secretly enjoy being the communities tongue in cheek whipping boy you are 100% delusional, the thing that sets salem apart from other games is the fact that it has the feel of one of these ancient games and along with it a diverse community of carebears, pvpers and asswipes all ***** with each other and the long histories that develop as a result. everyone knows everyone, and even when folks are spewing venomous trashtalk it is mostly in good fun from what i have seen and just an extension of the competition in game.
if marp really did put a bounty on claeyt for revealing the statue that is hilarious, and something you wont find in another game now days, only here. it is not like he is running around helping people look for or kill him with dev powers, quit ***** and being a *****.

There's a lot of things I hate about mainstream gaming, but keeping a community at least somewhat tolerable, or at the very least not taking sides in the drama, is just common sense. Most people will not tolerate a toxic community, even if its toxicity is just a very convincing 'just in good fun' illusion (which, coincidentally enough, is something assholes always seem to say when they're caught ***** on people), and they will definitely not tolerate devs getting right down to the level of its trolls. No point in arguing this, though. I think you're either insane or very apathetic, and you probably think I'm an idiot, and a fourth of the community seems to enjoy this dumbassery despite the fact it's screwing over a fairly fun game. Seriously, the game's 200x more enjoyable when you don't get yourself involved with forum crap, but it needs a decent amount of players to go above and beyond most games (such on the first days of the expedition before half the newbies and returning players realized: hey, there's a lot of assholes in this community). Unfortunately, since the game is closely linked to the forums and the forums suck, well, it pretty much ***** itself there.
The funny thing is: something tells me that even when the new player flow stops and the game returns to its pre-launch levels in population, those clinging to the sinking ship will probably still try to justify that the toxic waste stored on it couldn't possibly have burned any holes.
TLDR: Even the best games have an Achilles heel.
