According ti wikipedia, historically small amounts of iron ore were used as flux in the process of smelting copper

No. Only charcoal, which is funny, because by the 17th century, charcoal had quit being the primary source for ore and metal processing. Even areas that were coal poor imported it because of the superior steel quality produced with coal.

Nope. Coke is made from the kola bean... :P

I kept using the same system I had (13 ores, 12 limes). Seems I get 2 bars every 2 or 3 sessions, but always getting at least 1 bar.

Same here and I have no freaking clue what is this new smelting stuff.

I tried with 8-9-10-11 iron ore. Alway got 1 bar.
With 12-13-14 I got 1 or 2 bars. The more ore I put, the higher chance to get more bar (so 14 has been my best result so far).
I'll try 15-16 next.

Be aware that in order to test I did 2 batches on 7 smelters for each ore number aforementioned.

Notice my first two smelters: exactly same batches in exactly same order, but outcome on the last one is different.
