uh, wrong.
if a straight guy ***** "everything that moved" there would be a few extra cases, not the outbreak that ended up making the disease a household name like it is today.
gays do not wear condoms as they do not have children, until aids there was no such thing as "safe sex" in the gay community as the fear of gonnorhea and herpes was not enough to warrant it. however nobody wants a screaming 18 year financial drain, now or then. as such in the straight example the majority of infections would have been blocked by contraceptives, and of those that were infected a large portion would be butthurt and jilted from sex for months and may not have unprotected sex for years giving ample time for the disease to be detected and controlled.
the gay community on the other hand was and largely still is all about flamboyant behavior including rampant drug abuse and reckless *****, this level of behavior even among a group of drunken college kids was and still is the rare exception among heterosexuals.
so a gay spread the infection to a dozen people, each of them spread infection to a half dozen, each of them another half dozen and on and on. that is what happened and is how it became an epidemic overnight.
