The wording chosen here is questionable at best. If the "last man" (fourth) sees everyone, the second to last (third) sees the second and first, then the second guy is only supposed to see the first one.

However, here:

Second person picks dunce if 3-4 are both wearing admirals - or he picks admirals if one of 3-4 is wearing dunce.

Confirmed first actually correct answer. Previous answers seem suspiciously copy-pasted from the simpler version of the riddle as they only talk about three hats/people.

The second person is suddenly able to see people behind him. This solution, by the wording of the puzzle, only makes sense, if the person in question was third (second to last) and was able to see guys #1 and #2 respectively.

edt. That being said, the puzzle has no clear solution for the guy #2 (if the 1st person wears admirals, he can not be sure, whether he wears admirals too or dunce), so I assume, you meant the third (second to last) person to begin with.

ronpaulftw's first word should have been "last" rather than first, but whatever.

I'll detail the solution here:

the last person in the line stayed silent for long enough so that he could not know what hat he wore. That means the first three follow a 2-1 distribution. Ditto, the second to last is silent so does not know which hat he wears: if the two persons in front of him wore the same hat, he would have known he was wearing the other hat. The first two therefore have a 1-1 distribution (different hats). Therefore, the second person knows he has a different hat from the person in front of him if both persons behind him stay silent for long enough.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

This is flawed.

The 3rd (he who can see two others) can give the answer in all cases where the last person (the one who can see three others) is unable to give the answer.
The last guy knows there are 3 hats of type 1, and 2 of type 2. If he sees all of either type he knows the answer, which means that in front of him there are always 2 of type 1, and 1 of type 2.
The guy who can see only two of these will either see 2 of type 1, or 1 of each type. In both cases he can instantly give the answer. See my previous answer for the only way #2 could actually give the answer.

fair enough
In that case though, RonPaulFTW's first post was still the first one to post that answer :) Let's just say my logic depended on prisoners nr 3 being a moron, only calling out if the two in front of him wore a dunce hat.

His person one equals the last person in the above explanation. His logic is correct though, the answer just doesn't extend it one person further. However since 2 and 3 essentially do the same thing extending it doesn't matter much.

Had the correct logic (just with reversed order), but I skipped it at the time because I hadn't thought of that solution myself (stupidly).

And I thought it was a typo...

So basically, you posted an unsolvable/incomplete puzzle, since it wasn't stated, that the third guy is moron
And RonPaul gave an incorrect answer, solving the puzzle for guy #3
And you accepted that answer, because you are too lazy to proofread both the puzzle and the answer.

That's some serious claegue going on.
