Worked wonders for Socrates.

Well, it did didn't it? You're talking about his sacrifice for his beliefs almost 3000 years later.
We should all be so noble.

You seem to labor under the assumption that the ruling party actually changes between terms. You fail to consider, however, the more important circumstance that the political class always stays the same.

Tell that to Obama's Grandfather. Either the White one from Kansas or the Black one from Kenya.

Under the "old" system, I would have been placed into an apprenticeship. Sometimes this was on a merit system, sometimes it was purely political, but most of the time, especially for those of any lack of promising skills or political clout, it was simply slavery. The only real difference between the peasants and the serfs was that the peasants could at least try to find another place to live away from a lord they particularly hated.

No, the choice I'm referring to is the freedom to pick up and go wherever I want for work. If I'm getting burned out at my job, I can go get a new educated or change careers at any time.

I was once like you, jorb. I thought that the government meant everything. In reality, the government means nothing. No matter where you go, the government is just a puppet of those that wield the power. Sometimes it's the ruling body (be it a king, president, potentate, emperor, what have you) that has the power, sometimes it's the merchants, sometimes it's religious leaders. I'm fine with any but the last as long as long as We the People have enough freedom to choose to not remain slaves to oppression.

I think we agree here. I know the US voters got a big dose of this after Obama was elected. Chaos for the sake of chaos.... :?

The grandson of a Black servant who participated in the Mau Mau revolution, and a son of a tenant farmer from Kansas who fled his home for opportunities in the West and eventually joined WWII. How is this maintaining the Political Elite.

If you want to talk about George Bush (4 generations of millionares) or Mitt Romney (3 generations of wealth) then fine. But over here our last 2 Democratic Presidents came from the working class or lower middle class.

to bring this back to the thread, Women in politics are also a direct challenge to the political elite over the last 60 years.

Sure, sure. The facts of his history are one thing, but what about his policies once he got into office compared to what he was speaking of on the campaign trail?

Who was it that coined the phrase "The more things change, the more they stay the same"?

 A french Revolutionary said that.

Are Obama's policies more or less progressive than if McCain were president.

I'm not going to get into a discussion of US politics here. I probably shouldn't have brought it up. As much as I love debating "what ifs", it's not the thread for it. Let's try to stick to morality, empathy, and how our video game playing youth is corrupt.

Guess I shouldn't have made that last post without that disclaimer. :|

That we're having this debate about the misogyny of gamer's at all proves that empathy and decency exist in this community we've created. What standards do we want to enforce? I've noticed that the game enforces itself. Some idiot called one of the female players "a *****, and some other rude stuff" in the market, so one of the higher players tracked him down and killed him with her help in feeding the offending player trackable stolen items. Misogynists beware.

Another advantage to being a girl in Salem. You can get guys to walk 2 hours to kill some guy who called you a name.

She's going to read this, so I should probably say, Yes, your cards are pretty. :D
