First, I don't know what else could be there if it was some old ammo cache - WW2 grenades? artillery ammo? mines?

Second, I'd rather notify authorities before someone accuses me of illegally storing/disposing weapons when I try to get rid of them.

yes because some old commerical .22 ammo you can buy at a department store is indicative of ww2 ordnance surplus

i probably have ammo laying all over my yard/house just from dropping some while shooting and lugging **** between point a/b

I thought it's obvious that most people have no knowledge about armaments, so I didn't mention it. Apparently not obvious enough.

I have never seen a real gun in my life, not even bullets. Only in TV and in games. In my country (and in most european) you will rarely see a gun in public. But every now and then we will hear in news that some dud from WW2 was found on construction site or in forest followed by a sapper intervention.

So there, I'm an ignorant who can't tell commercial 0.22 ammo from whatever was used in WW2. And I'm not really impressed with your knowledge / experience with guns (I assume that your comment about how common ammo is in your house was meant to impress, because I can't see any other point in it)

my comment was meant to illustrate the harmlessness of loose rounds laying around in contrast to you/people like those in the article that consider a bag of ammo to be the same as unexploded ww2 grenades and actually think it is reasonable to call out numerous agencies because they found some old farmers squirrel ammo in their pond instead of just leaving it there to continue rotting or throwing it in the trash.

i mean as they said, "what if my cat would have found it!?"

the answer is nothing at all, guess it may have eaten one if it is the habit of snacking on gravel or something.......

this is a picture of my dog right after he decided to steal a pound of high velocity pistol powder (about 2 or 3x what was contained in all of those rounds together) off of my reloading bench (or as your sensationalist media refers to them, "ammunition factory") , note that he is intact and not a layer of fresh paint on my wall. instead of running around the house slobbering all over my powder and giving a good laugh i shudder to think what would of happened if this occured in your country and someone found out about it, they would probably say i was training an army of muslim terrordogs or something

I can understand where their fear would have come from based on the unknown factors that weren't already seen at the time. As it was already said, there could have been live grenades or other explosives tucked away back there and it's a very good idea to call the police in a case like that. In countries without laws for owning guns in place, disposing of those things on your own is a fairly serious and risky thing. In my country all firearms must be registered and if you were to try to keep these as keep-sakes or w/e or if you were to try to dispose of them and someone in waste management found it there would be trouble. The added measures when searching were not because of the ammunition but because of the potential of finding other dangerous things (I don't see how a white jumpsuit will protect you from an underfoot explosive however)

British people can be quite silly when snow is coming to town.

This is so true. It pisses me off when we get an inch of snow or any moderatly unusual weather and the news blows it out of proportion. All I can remember of last years snow is me flying down a hill on my sledge and having snow ball fights with my daughter having good times and the media portray it as a natural disaster.

oh god, why did i post this on a board full of the very people these two stories are about to begin with

i guess you really don't "get it", for most americans (even in places like california) these two "incidents" are the equivalent of finding a spork or spare change laying around. when is the last time a big ruckus was made and the "underwater search team" was called out over some dirty syringes from the local doper populace?

the danger from that, what anyone who lives in a city walks past every single day without realizing it is immeasurably more dangerous and high risk than a shopkeeper finding what is essentially a bb gun round on the floor and some emasculated retard having a bag of .22s in his koi pond.

anyhow you folks go ahead and enjoy being good subjects in your nanny state where you go to jail for defending yourself, have a surveillance camera on every corner and can't speak your mind. meanwhile i will be sitting in my 120 acre backyard, legally shooting guns better than your military has while tinkering on one non eco friendly gas guzzler or another yelling the occasional racist or sexist slur when my knuckles slip off the wrench.
