I think the biggest difference between the two games is that one of them was commercially advertised and, is therefore, being played at a competitive level with real gamers. The other is a collection of niche gamers who due to their limited exposure to other gaming titles can co-exist with much less confrontation, dedication, or skill due to to no one player or group ever "raising the bar".

No, I think the main difference is the amount of money that was spent on Salem vs. HnH...none of that really matters now though, because Haven and Hearth is still far more popular than Salem, and I don't believe HnH has had any advertising at all.

Where was it advertised in a meaningful way? I didn't see much at all aside from just opening the flood gates on a few MMO sites with "closed beta" keys
