I still have no idea some of the key commands, I couldn't even figure out how to quit the game, had to die of starvation (which wasn't easy). I just don't have the patience for the key command way of playing. Sorry. Good game though.

the interface fully adheres to scandinavian game developer standards, i.e. fully inscrutable

Interface in DF is not obscure - every action is labeled and structured. It just not suited for large-scale administration of dwarves. The only obscure screen I found in DF is military/squad one.

But it's net necessarily clear on what some of those commands do or how they'd even be remotely useful. With all my 30 or so years of playing computer games and growing up in the era of text, ASCII/ANSI, and low-res graphic interfaces, I've forgotten how accustom I am to these things until I started trying to explain to my son how to play it. I then realized how obscure some it actually was without having to go to the user created manuals and guides.

And the military is 10x better than it used to be.... :|

Better but it's much more difficult to program and apply without already understanding it. =)
