A paste of borax is also good for roaches and ants. And it's much safer for pets than Raid or other neurotoxic insecticides.

It doesn't work particularly well because ants are smart enough to go around in. They just climb the walls/doorjambs or find other openings.

Edit: Also, on killing fleas, salt works just as well as Borax, and is both cheaper and safer for pets. Works the same way, sprinkle in on your floors, leave for 24 hours, and vacuum it up. To kill fleas and eggs in pillows or cushions, bag them up in garbage bags, seal tightly, and sit them in the sun for a few days. The heat explodes the eggs.

Putting a little bit of Vick's vapor rub on a Q-tip and rubbing it into surfaces repels pets and keeps them away from things like my favorite reading chair - the fumes from the menthol and camphor sting their noses. Also works on cords, and doesn't stain wood or leather.
