This game is nearly impossible for new players

Postby vintreet » Sun Feb 17, 2013 10:35 pm

So, having played about a month now, my friends and I have finally been located by the local horde of high humour players. In the time that we got started, we were able to get triple walls, 10 or so braziers built and we were well on our way to higher purity food with our farms. Unfortunately, from what we could tell, there is no fast track to high humours. Therefore we had no way to defend ourselves against the raiders. It was only a matter of time until someone found us.

The established players are incredibly over powered and will always be overpowered so long as they crush the weaker players before they can build up infrastructure. The game rewards griefing newbs.

Perhaps it just wasn't a game for us, perhaps we could restart and build smarter... But really, I think we would just be found again, 5+ 500+ humour players would show up and we'd be starting over yet again.

Now the tribe is going to say "you should have payed the treaty" but extortion by other players doesn't really make for a fun kind of game. Plus, we didn't even know about the tribe until a couple weeks ago, and players who don't get active in the forums or IRC would never have the opportunity to learn about the horde of over powered players that demand silver from new players who can't defend themselves.

So in short, my final review of this game is that it could be really great. It has a ton of potential, and I haven't played a game like this since the early days of Ultima Online. But the lack of balance (no humour caps) and the inability for new players to reach greater strength to defend themselves cripples the game play for new players. It's sad that a game with such potential is completely destroyed by the over powered established player base. But maybe I'm wrong.

To me, the one thing that could fix the game is a humour cap that would be reasonably reachable within 2-3 or so weeks from starting, and stronger defenses for claims. Being wiped out in 30-60 minutes is kind of lame.

All you needed was a village claim and two or three times as many braziers. The game is hard for new players, especially when there is no clear path as to what your priorities should be. Now, you can take away what you learned for the past month and accomplish everything that took you a month to do in the matter of a couple of weeks. To me, it didn't really seem like you lost very much...but I think the tribe will be posting a thread in HoB soon enough so we can all have the details of your base layout and what you actually lost.

I forgot to mention, that I seriously doubt they had 500 humours...most likely a couple 2-300 humours with a couple nublets mixed in.

We didn't quite have the 2500s for a village claim yet. We probably would have made it there by the end of this week though. But the problem is we have no motivation to try again. We are confident that we'll just be found and crushed again, with all the work down the drain yet again.

On top of that 2 of the 4 of us were starting to get bored and felt that there wasn't much reward left in the game beyond trying to raid, which we felt was too far out of our reach, or maybe explore the darkness, which we haven't even walked far enough to find yet.

All in all, we're just not masochistic enough to want to try again.

After you have everything in the game there isn't much to do other then eat and raid.

Darkness is not complete yet so check back later if you are still interested.

It sounds like this game isn't for you guys.

Yup, because extortion by other players is fun.

Protection from other players is fun. But I guess you had more fun losing all your hard work. To each their own I guess.

If four of you were playing a month and didn't have 2500 silver, you're doing something wrong.

Dried hides aren't worth much, but in bulk, they add up a lot. Especially with 4 people killing any rabbits they see whenever they're out. Beaver hides are even better, and you can use the brain to make leather from one of those rabbit hides.

You can also smelt some ore and sell it in Boston.

Plus, savage charms.

And the treaty may be a form of extortion, but it protects you too. I've been safe with my gimpy two walls and a dozen braziers and the protection of the tribe for over a month now. And I have some big neighbors.
