Magic is one of the most elegant games ever designed. I've played it on and off since -94 (Revised/Fallen Empires), and I still do. I do feel that some of the cards they've made over the last couple of sets have gone off a deep end in terms of general power level and/or mechanics obscurity, but that really doesn't matter that much when the essentials of the game are as harmonious as they are. Cudos, Richard Garfield.

... also I'm not a big fan of the art/lore direction on recent sets. Too much epic background noise, too much sanitized and centralized storytelling. Lorwyn was really nice, though.

i don't know jorb i LOVED Innestrad and Return to Ravnica is rather nice. Background story adds flavor to it that it was missing. In Innestrad i build some really fun WW/Vampire decks and nothing was more fun then facing a Human deck designed to fight it, Was always a good match and really enjoyable. Now with RR and GC i love playing guild sets and just facing off against other guild players. Personally i roll with Boros and i have friends that play each of the others and we do 6 player FFA's and its a blast.

Idk. I'm not hating too much. In the broader fantasy market you can certainly do a lot worse than Magic. A lot of the core settings are decent as such, but the high-end emphasis on Planeswalkers and Mythic Legendary whats-her-faces with personal names and no general qualities what-ever does, however, distract from more player-driven storytelling.

Innistrad would, for example, strike me as far more interesting if conceived as a general and eternal setting where Avacyn is forever lost and missing, and where Darkness never really ascends either.

Also, all art now looks like this: http://magiccards.info/query?q=Mondrone ... rd&s=cname

When previously it at least theoretically could look like this:

http://magiccards.info/5e/en/356.html
http://magiccards.info/fe/en/42.html
http://magiccards.info/query?q=Typhoon&v=card&s=cname
http://magiccards.info/fe/en/14.html
http://magiccards.info/query?q=noble+el ... rd&s=cname

... much has been lost. People like Drew Tucker or Amy Weber would never be signed on today, and the tragedy in that is plain to see.

The clockwork beast reminds me of a LOTR poster i had from before the movies, very interesting art style.

Indeed it is. Idk. Much of the new art just gives off this disneyfied Sword & Sorcery vibe, and, well. I'm not a huge fan, quite simply.

... oh well. The game is still fantastic and Wizards are by and large doing the Lord's good work!
