Thing to remember is that silver can be VERY easy to earn in game, but it takes a few hours of dedicated play time to learn the system. It won't be easy at first (as it shouldn't be), but within... say 12 hours of play time, you should be able to net 100 silver an hour fairly easily. That Writ of Homesteading you lost only costs 150 at the Company Store in town. With the exception of unique items (such as the clothing), this game really is free to play. Even then, you could grind enough silver to buy those sorts of things off someone.
