Merchants are historically very much hated people. They actually inspired Germany to create propaganda against a people that was known as avid merchants at that time.

Edit: Due to forum restrictions I am not allowed to link to one of the most prominent anti-merchant propaganda of that time. :(

Hansa propaganda? Why in the world would you not be able to link to it? Sexually explicit or something?

I was allowed to post it. Beware though that in some countries, such as France, the video is auto-disabled XD.

The movie is rather well-known propaganda in which a main argument is that Germans hate the act of merchanting without producing. Basically, they consider people who just sell/buy without producing to be parasites.

Since propaganda often uses hyperbole, illogical argumentation and lies, don't be surprised if you disagree with some things there.

It is an interesting movie for historical reasons.

Edit: if you search for the title of the video in wikipedia, you'll find quite much information about its background as well.

Bards were thought of similarly, the outlaws of their time... An outlaw with a lute... But yeah, in D&D a bard would stop leveling if he moved up in alignment past neutral chaotic. And merchants do basically make their living off the misfortunes of others. All of my best business arrangements happened during sieges, often from both parties
