Isn't this supposed to be real worldly? there were plenty of hermit farmers and they sold goods to towns, towns don't buy goods in this game unless they are super high purity, his argument seems to be towards newbies who don't have the ability to get high purity items. A hermit shouldn't expect to live in a mansion but should be rewarded for the crops he grows. Well a hermit that is willing to go to town and trade at least.

If I can drop a history bomb here, hermiting in the 1600s was incredibly rare and often tended to be driven back to town by the native populations. Crops were never really a big deal in early New England which was focused more on other resources like timber, furs, fish, and to a lesser extent iron. Furs being the only item an individual could make much selling on and which the NPC stall buys plenty of. So for more trading individual resources belonging to a town makes more sense historically as well.
