On the open beta stream they were pretty openly against the idea of a centralized auction house. Ideological reasons from what I understand.

Absolutely. In my case you are definitely preaching to the choir. I think the stall system is inherently unfair to new players. It arbitrarily punishes potentially very industrious new players for simply not being around when they were first implemented. I'm simply refering to what they said during the stream when they were asked about it. However, as I recall they gave no definitive solution to the problem, if they indeed even considered it a problem at all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of auction houses either, but the current implementation of stalls is just the same thing, only worse. I can definitely see stalls working, but not in Boston. If they were instead built by players on their own claims there'd be no problems. Anyone who wants one could build it, but they'd have to consider security so having a shop wouldn't exactly be cheap. It'd take a fairly big town to have a marketplace that doesn't get cleaned out by thieves on a regular basis. There'd also be some positive social implications. Since you couldn't simply teleport to the marketplace trade would be limited to neighbours. This would make big towns encourage hermits to settle near them, and protect them from raiders. Owning a stall can make you filthy rich, but a marketplace is no good without customers hence the need for lots of hermits in your area.
