Inheritance seems rather weak. Didn't my father teach me anything? Not even how to whittle or weed his fields. Not even some bible reading to give me some faith.

No, he abandoned you when he left for the new world. When he arrived in the new world he knew nothing so could not have taught you anything before he left.
