A wee improvement on sheds and idea for coal storage

Postby thl111 » Fri May 17, 2013 11:44 am

Having coal clamps which produce 40+ coal is great but when you want to mass produce metal with the continual flow of coal and without the needs to expand claim/build more boxes or chests [that will litter your base anyway], leaving coal piles where they are is a problem. So, I suggest coal bags to store 60 of those precious black lumps. It can be made from 4 cotton cloths (I prefer hemp cloth but that's out of the question, obviously) and coal bags once filled are liftable objects which then can be put on sled or stored in shed. This brings me to shed. If it could have about 5 slots in addition to current space to store object, such as sleds, boulders, coal bags, etc... it would be great help.
P/s: There is another thread that vaguely mentions about this idea and it has other suggestions so I make this separate topic to further discuss the idea.

hmm, what about building the coal clamps inside the mine?

Nice idea nonetheless.

Yes, I'm well aware of that thread, thus the P/s.

I want to focus more on coal storage and the shed.

The whole point of storage being expensive is that you have to decide if its worth expanding your claim or not, if you make it so that you can store loads of stuff in too small a place then it defeats the point.

I also agree with Procne that you should have just bumped the other thread.

I didn't mean that he should bump the other thread. Just thought he didn't see it so I linked it so he could read it. But apparently thl111 already knew about it.
The idea of carriable objects to transport large amounts of specific goods is interesting.

If one decides to not expand one's claim and keeps on storing goods in given capacity, it's called management. With the ability to store bulk items in more convenient manners such as this, it adds depth into the whole aspect yet retains the limit which is the size of claim. As mentioned above, coal bags are liftable objects and that means they take space directly on the claim like boulders, sleds or other buildings. This, as I humbly think, doesn't interfere with the whole point of storage being expensive. If player wants to have more space to store more coal bags, he will have to consider to either expand the claim or use up his reserve goods. Oh, you also have a very clear example in front of you, the barrel. Think of coal bags as those. It certainly can take a considerable amount of flour or water while also takes up space on the floor and yet cheaper to make and way smaller than chests or boxes.
About the older thread, I wanted to bump it up but then, it mentions about bulk items in general which might be confusing when discuss about specific goods.

Ok, fair point, I had concentrated too much on the portion of the OP that mentioned sheds having slots. Just to clarify, I am all for item specific storage solutions.

Because I created this thread only to suggest coal storage.
