We don't need pearls anymore, we have silver coins
Nice idea! I like the idea of receiving much more random crap while doing stuff like chipping rocks etc (this might actually give incentive to do ore chipping by hand instead of the stamp mill).
Possibly give them a use as artifice as well?

Which is where the Jeweler's Craft comes in!
Imagine all the accessories and slottables you could do with that! You could also make new sparkly fetishes and decorations for all kinds of things, masks, hats, cuff links, or how bout some nice diamond slotted brass knuckles!! This is a must need along with the domestic animals and the plants & trees suggestions!

metals + gems = all kinds of possibilities. Rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, crowns/tiaras, all those you mentioned. Can use it for looks or perks. Can customize weapons with them as well. Possibilities are endless.

I like the idea of getting inspirationals while mining, I don't like them all being gems. I'd expect a little more variety. But gems being used for crafting might be cool.

I like the idea of getting rare random curios while doing manual labour like chipping rocks, but why does it have to be upper-range jewels like diamonds and rubies, like in so many other games. Those are extremely rare, and while New England with surroundings is a big place, I have never heard of any famous diamond mines there. Why not go the more puritan way of amethysts, petrified wood, rose quartz or similar (not up to date on Salem geology).
