Curious about the Game's Misleading Name

I am just curious why the Devs have not changed the name of the game to something more appropriate to stop luring people into thinking this is a sandbox-carebear type game?

Salem - The Crafting Game (with one hell of a hidden secret to the uninitiated)

Salem - The Perma-Death Crafting Game would be the appropriate title for this game and let anyone know ahead of time what they are about to look into...so why hide its nature? I am just quite curious about this....

"Perma-Death" is quite desastrous marketing-wise

Perma death pvp and crafting has always been a bit of an oxymoron to me.

I do think there is a massive base of players out there in the real world who would jump on the idea of a server where they could sandbox without the perma death/pvp aspect.

Salem is "The Crafting MMO" because the character development is based on crafting (rather than the quests & etc of typical MMOs), not because it's only about crafting.

Because there is zero crafting in this game right?

There is zero hiding the fact this is a open world permadeath game since it is listed as a core feature that will never change.

As said before, it's the "Crafting MMO" because all character progression occurs through crafting.

And just like most MMO's it has PvP combat.

And like some MMO's it has an open sandbox environment.

And like a few MMO's it has a permanent death feature (like Wizardry Online, but meaningful).

If someone assumes from the tagline "Crafting MMO" that the game is for care-bears it's because of their own assumptions about crafting. In some games crafting requires huge investments in PvE and sometimes PvP combat, and defiantly isn't for the faint of heart. Eve Online comes to mind. Getting high-tier resources in that game in the quantities needed is near impossible without some serious muscle behind you.

So I disagree that the tagline is misleading, nor that the devs are trying to hide the nature of the game. Heck, on the About page the second sentence starts with "The game features permadeath as one of its main gimmicks..." You're supposed to die in this game, and I think the devs have done a good job communicating that expectation. I think a lot of people disregard this expectation because it's not the norm.

Crafting is a major part of salem, however a warning that PvP is also a HUGE element would be nice. Many a player I've invited have read "the crafting mmo" and complained "I thought you said this game was hardcore!".

Maybe "The harcore crafting mmo" might work better

I don't think it's an oxymoron because they aren't inherently contradictory. I do agree that they are sorta on opposite ends of the spectrum, and the juxtaposition of the two themes is what makes Salem so great imo.

It's not misleading at all. People just misinterpret the game's title 'crafting' as something akin to other mmos out there. When fundamentally crafting in Salem is everything and not some added on feature.

It's really just a trap for those with minds like mentioned above so bambis, carebears and the other likes will flock to this game and spend money in the cash store and as a bonus jorbtar get to collect the tears for doing so.
