- Make all characters stay online even after log-off.
- Add beds for characters to sleep in.
- For travelers make some makeshift bed and ability to put it into leanto.
- For advanced travelers make craftable tent that can be placed from inventory and be picked up again. Will act like leanto with bed.
- Sleeping characters can be robbed. Maybe leaving not just theft scents, but battery or something similar too. So it will be a bit harder than to rob chest.
- Accessing containers in leanto/tent if player sleeps in it will leave additional scents too.
- Sleeping chars regen humors slowly. Around 8 hours for full regen at least.
- Chars logged out not in bed go KO after 12 or so hours - this will give enough time to fix disconnection problems.
- Gradually lower humor regen speed and maybe amounts healed from food too if char has not slept for 24+ hours.
- Sleeping for 1 hour allows 6-8 hours of non-sleeping, capped at 24-48 hours.
- New characters start with with 3-5 days of non-sleeping allowance.
Right now the only problem with this suggestion I see is safety of peaceful noobs vs sleeping alt walls - either anyone can be KO/killed in sleep or we will have impenetrable walls made of sleeping alts. Though it can be fixed by enabling lifting of sleeping/KO/dead characters. I know currently it is difficult to implement, but it needs fixing anyway - saw some people making temporary impenetrable walls by killing alts at mine shaft door.

This is a big issue that needs a solution, but I have yet to see a fair one. You are right that a problem with this is having players that have nothing to do with alts being vulnerable. It doesn't seem quite fair. Maybe the waste claims are a completely bad idea. What is the point of it? 1. To give owners warning. 2. To help with the destruction of everything in raids. Can't see much else. With that, I'd say screw the warning, and implement thieving abilities. Climbing walls would allow thieves to get inside, take what they choose, and climb back out. They could use a pulley of sorts to grab a chest as well. Pick-locking maybe to unlock and open gates to be able to take more. Then if someone really, really, wants to burn a place to the ground, get a waste claim and deal with the possible alt storing/transfer issue, because at that point you are out for destruction, not the goods.
I still love the bed ideas, just not as a stay logged in thing. There has to be a good solution out there somewhere. Come on people, I know there are tons of good ideas out there.

i really like this idea. however i would allow a grace period for logged out chars so they cannot be harmed for some amount of hours regardless if they're in a bed or not, real life happens.
also, what to do with chars logging out in boston?

Make taverns that charge huge amounts of silver per hour for a room.

Good morning,
How about this as a solution?
An offline character's inventory/equipped items can be stolen from their homestead. Works just like existing Larceny.
Characters without homesteads either drop their inventory on logout or remain logged in.
Destroying an offline player's homestead drops their inventory on the ground where the homestead was located.

Lore-wise Ender's suggestion is pretty good. But in practice, people will murder anyone they see sleeping, just for fun.

Nope, some ISP's got 24+h time for support repairs.
What if you get phone and have to exit game while being at middle of forest?
You can lose few weeks char just like that.

that works as well, its kinda half way to what ender is saying but could be more pratical.
although
Characters
without homesteads either drop their inventory on logout or remain logged in.
doesn't address the "real life happens" issue. too harsh for things like disconnects power outage, crying babies stuff like that.
Finally decent thread on alt vaulting

I feel the "real life happens" issue is resolved by having a homestead. Is there a valid reason not to have a homestead set, even when exploring or travelling long distances? Even if travelling far and wide, you don't tear down your lean-to before heading out, right?
