Increase Stall Upkeep, Pay for Upkeep from Taxes

Postby Kaol » Thu Dec 20, 2012 12:28 pm

Ok so i thought this was a good suggestion and deserved it's own thread. Essentially it solves all my gripes from both the sellers side (not being able to get hold of a stall) and from the buyers side (stalls always empty or full of crap)

I think the stalls are generally ok but that the rent is too low.

What i would propose is to increase the weekly rent by a big factor, but to make it so that the tax you pay goes towards that rent.

Eg a base rent of 2.5K per week instead of the tiny 300 per week at the moment, but tax going towards paying the rent.

That way at 15% tax, you are not having to pay any rent if you ship 16.67K worth of goods in a week.

Of course the numbers could be tweaked.

This would make it less easy for towns to hoover up all the stalls and keep them tied up without actually selling any goods, or for a player to go largely inactive but keep paying the rent on his stall without actually selling anything.

Successful stalls ought to be rewarded as this makes the system better for both the seller and the buyer.

Hmm good idea in the short run. In the long run we would still need some overhaul of stalls

The problem with stalls is in my opinion the lack of availability both beacuse of high entry price and the shear lack of new ones.

I propose either make stalls more available to the common man or switch alltogether to a auction house system.
Right now its like the AH is reserved for the rich. If stall option is kept it would be nice is the renter of the stall could customise
the looks of the stalls so that the buyer could recognise a good seller. Also the stalls should be able to sell AND buy stuff.

Well, Kaol's idea makes stalls more available to people who really want to use them.

True, but that set up also might strangle the use of stalls if there is too little turnover of wares. Nobody would risk using them if they might become pure silver drains. Maybe just a balance issue.. Right now just one or two stalls in Plymouth sell decent stuff, rest are pure storage or has crazy prices so something needs to be done.

Obviously the numbers are up for debate, but i think well run stalls can make alot of money, personally i would prefer there to be often stalls abandoned than stalls that are full of crap or used as vaults.

Take the following example:

We have 14 people willing and capable of running a stall.
There are 20 stalls in total.

Scenario a - Low Rent)

All 20 stalls are occupied, only 8 of the willing and capable sellers have been able to purchase one. The other stalls are either empty or selling rubbish or used as vaults.
6 sellers are unable to sell their goods which is unfair on them and leads to price inflation, 12 of the stalls are wasting space and make browsing tedious for the buyer.

Scenario b - High Rent)

Only 14 stalls are occupied, all the willing and capable sellers have a stall. Prices are lower for the buyer, and noone is having to sift through empty stalls and vaults. 2 of the sellers are very wealthy and could choose to buy out the other stalls, but the price of 30K + 15K per week makes this unatrractive and so there are 6 stalls available should more people wish to purchase one.

Most stalls are empty because one faction got few of them!!!
When one town got only one stall it is almost always full or 50% loaded, trust me I got stall and you always find there something,
maybe it won't be useful for you, but people are buying it in ~12h.
Upkeep is ok and taxes are too hight for items on stalls that breaks Salems economy, we could have some nice factions of traders that buy and sell only and get some nice income from that, but 15% tax sucks, we should get some skill to lower stall tax!!!

Yeah and my proposal makes it difficult for towns to just occupy loads of stalls and not use them. If you didn't have a stall you wouldn't be too happy that half the stalls are empty when you would be able to make use of them.

Funny, everytime I check the stalls in Boston they are always loaded...except the ones south of the spawn point, but as of late those have had some decent goods on them as well. Just because whatever people are selling isn't exactly what you want a TON of people do buy from the stalls, but you wouldn't know that unless you actually owned one.

just because you dont have a stall does not mean there is a problem.

stalls are fine how they are, it is only the crybabies mad they dont have one pissing and moaning about them.
