Unique and Limited Edition Items

Postby DangerousLee » Mon Dec 17, 2012 4:43 am

I am suggesting to add some unique items and/or limited edition items to encourage the need for money in the game. As of now, there is no reason to want more silver at later stages of the game and this alone is sufficient to kill any economic system. This idea is similar to one already posted (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2416). The main difference is that the idea I am proposing now has 2 functions. The first one, is that I want it to be a big money sink that would therefore make people want a lot of money. The second one has to do with later game dynamics where any unique or limited edition items would be sought for and a rivality could emerge to own these items. Since they would require a lot of silver (They could be auctionned at Boston too), only town owners would likely have enough money to purchase them, put them in their town hall (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3063) and provide enough protection.

These items could give small buffs to citizens of a town. You could have something like the original copy of Newton's book (gives +10% bonus to inspirationals studied), Adam's smith book (Lower upkeep), a war trophy... Some items (architecture plans) could unlock the ability to build a special building (costs upkeep), well anything that you can imagine and that would be cool in the setting of Salem. The little buffs are necessary so that people would be willing to spend this money and the town owner would be happy with it since it would likely increase player traffic in his town, further boosting his earnings.

Please show your support if you find the ideas interesting and you think that their implementation would improve Salem. I will answer any question you may have to my best and thanks for reading.

I am not against some rare items bought for silver, although bonuses like lower upkeep or 10% inspirationals bonus are kinda lackluster.

However, you keep repeating how there is no need for silver. I said it in other thread - the silver functions as currency. There don't have to be additional "needs" for it.
In H&H point system was used while trading. Traders in their threads specified how many points specific items were worth, both when buying and selling. And during trade each side gave items of identical value in points. Now we have silver which takes the role of those points. You no longer have to do barter trade by collecting goods with proper value for exchange. You can sell something one day and receive silver, and then use this silver next day to buy something. That's the purpose of currency - common denominator which can be used to describe value of most items / services.

So the "need" for silver is pretty simple. I can use it to exchange for other goods. I have lots of silver and need to build extra braziers? Instead of smelting more iron I can simply buy it. Or materials for wall. Or some missing ingrredients to buy food. The only problem limiting trade of this kind is the lack of supply. I may have enough silver to buy 50 iron bars but finding supplier may be hard, at least on Plymouth.

Sure, we could use extra silver sinks, but I think it will balance out with claim upkeeps, stall taxes and high level player not hunting crickets

Please use existing threads on such matters. I believe even jorb has came in and requested suggestions for improving the Salem store (in game "Massachusetts Bay Company" store and the premium store.) If you have specific examples, please provide them. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2692&hilit=store
