Dyes

Postby overlordror » Mon Nov 19, 2012 11:35 am

I searched these forums to see if this has been suggested before, but I couldn't find it. Apologies if this has been mentioned before.

I'd like to see a system of dyes in the game so that when you're crafting some of the higher tiered clothing and such, you can also craft dyes that you can use on the clothing to change the color. I feel like this would help keep a bit of diversity in the game and it could also benefit the game monetarily if a dye pack was sold for people who may not want to farm the ingredients for the dyes.

Another bonus aspect is towns taking up certain colors to identify themselves to one another, sort of like a uniform. There's enough plant life in the game that all of the basic colors could be covered by mixing Plant Material + Gelatinous Lard + Bottle = Dye. The type of plant material you mix determines the color of dye you get. For example, Devil's Wort would yield red, Lavender Blewit would be blue, Witch's Hat would be black and so on.

For an added degree of difficulty, you could even make it so that the plant material had to be dried on a drying rack or something similar to a herbalist's table in HnH in order to get a desiccated form of the plant to grind with a mortar and pestle.

Neat concept that has seen use in many games like Mabinogi, lot of required programming/graphical work to do.

If we do see it, it wouldn't be for a long while.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

It fits into the category of "purely cosmetic" - nothing wrong with that, but might be a bit further down the priority list for now. Wouldn't be surprised to see it some day though, as it fits pretty well into the general lore and has been mentioned quite a few times already like this thread a few pages back:

(some pretty good ideas in that one)

"Purely cosmetic" items are a great way to encourage people to spend money to get what they want 'now', and ways to make your character look unique are always a draw. I like the idea.

Maybe even throwing milkweed into the concoction and have a suitable skill that plays along with it, such as "novice herbalism" unlocking the dyes perhaps sell the bottles in Boston till a glassblowing skill has been made.

Also though this may not tie into the cosmetic portion the the same idea for dyes could also play a role for clay colors and brick laying. (not sure if this was mentioned before)
