Optional ingrediants

I was thinking about this off and on for the past few days, and what I am suggesting is this;

Optional ingredients for some recipes. We will use a non-existent biscuit as an example. The biscuit would have a set of required ingredients, those being flour, water, and lard (or butter). Also, it has a fourth ingredient, the optional one. This optional ingredient is "any herb." If you leave the herb out, you get the basic biscuit with it's humor values based on which flour you used. If you use the optional though, it gives you the chance to modify the humors in some way both positively and negatively. Say you used flame azalea in the recipe. In this example the flame azalea would further boost, lets say, the yellow humor by a small amount but would decrease one or more of the other humor values of the biscuit. Furthermore, this system could also open up for more imported herbs that would have less negative effects on the food it's used on. People with poison craft could make poisoned foods with specially concocted poisons in the place of an optional ingredient.

Thoughts? Ideas?

This already exists to a degree by having intermediary food products, eg, the bajgiel http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Bajgiel which is a gluttable food on its own, but if you "add ingredients to it" (eg, berry bajgiel) then it becomes more potent and takes on the variable properties of that extra ingredient.

I think I like that system more than having recipes with a variable number of ingredients, that just sounds really annoying to deal with in terms of the interface... if you had a bag full of ingredients you'd have to empty out all of the ingredients that could go into the extra ingredient slot before making it if you didn't want to make it with an optional ingredient.

It could be cool to explore more food items than bajgiels doing that though... Some other similar examples that come to mind are rye bread -> garlic bread... poultry wings -> hot wings... there's probably a few others. Room for more though, I'm sure.

Why not the ability to just grab sugar and right click it on a food? or pepper? and adding too much makes the food worse, having sugar and spice make it so that the chance of adding more is actually better but at a random event. just an idea

This is a great idea, could add some well needed fun in gluttony.

But it's probably too hard for JC to code ¦]

I thought about this too. The way I suggested or the way you suggest, I think either would be nice.

Just the bagel I think? Hm, I don't know. I never paid any attention when making them.
