Spear fishing and schools of fish

Postby Tulgarath » Wed Oct 07, 2015 4:17 pm

Is it possible to spawn random schools along bodies of water and hunting in those schools? Many of the systems require little travel. Crops, mining, even fish traps are stationary. Having schools move on a more moment to moment basis (think fish traps do slowly rotate stock) would get people or of the walls more. Just thought it could make fishing more focused on the particular fish you pull up if it was a school. Also could do more for adding new fish types or rare fish.

I've enjoyed fishing in most games I have seen it in, but I have never really enjoyed the fishing in Salem. I have resorted to largely just placing traps. The time invested vs reward just isn't there for fishing to me.

Spear fishing could use a wooden stick, or a crafted spear. Chance of success and of saving the spare for reuse could be based on flora and fauna.

That kinda sounds like wow...

The place where you fish, traps or by hand, already matters, a lot.
Granted, fishing in Salem could be a little more fun.

Would be nice to see active fishing a yield a bit more fish. ..maybe only the skilled fisher can get the big fish, too smart for traps.

Might be a bit wow like, but I'd rather do that than place a trap and go check every few hours.

If fish had meters like animals, yield could change.

fish already exist in pools, that move around, they are just invisible.

They have a roaming area of something like 9 tile's, meaning a 4 tile radius from their spawn point.

Fair enough. ..but I'd still like to see a hunting mechanic, with perhaps a better yield.

Fish traps are too easy, if anything there should be a rare spawn in them, say a King Crab. ..that appears when you open the trap, breaking the trap and engaging you in combat. That seems more Salem-like than log on you fish tap alt and collect x amount of fish. .logout.

Once you know how to fish, know what fish are in each location, when they pools cycle, you can pull fish out on almost every single line cast. (Line fishing)

Back in my group play, we had a dedicated fisher, who could pull out red herrin like crazy for the group, getting something insane like 18 in an inventory, in a very short period of time.

Knowing how to fish and enjoying the current system are different. Fishing is one system I am not fond of in its current form. Hence, the suggestion :)
