I do apologize if this has already been suggested (unfortunately I lack the time to go through all ideas )
Yesterday I was playing with a friend who had madness and logged out in a bed with a teddy bear in his hand.
However he does not know the exact time he logged out and now he is afraid to log in because he does not know when the 8 hours will expire.
Therefore I would suggest some sort of up-to-date madness level in the online character profile or displaying the last game logout time for the characters.
Implementing this would really help in such situations.

Or use a custom client, use the timer function, set it to 8 hours - then check timer with an alt (or just click new character, timer can be checked in the character creation area).

At least, I don't think the timer feature is part of the default client; should be though if not - is pretty essential imo.

I don't think it would be possible. I'm pretty sure that server does not update your madness while your character sleeps, only when it wakes up. It then checks how long the char was asleep and if it has teddy equipped
