Low level security ideas

As a newbie, one of my concerns was always the protection of my stuff. Buying and maintaining a claim is a bit expensive at the beginning, building a fence doesn't make much sense if anyone can open the gate, making a lock is definitely not something newbies can do.

So, two ideas:
Hidden traps: This goes well with the idea of trapping others already proposed. This would be the lowest level of security. The player could build some simple, hidden traps which would attack those who do not know they are there. There are some considerations here, naturally - who can see and disarm them, is there a way to move through them without triggering them, etc - I live those for the game designer.

Thorn fences: A bit higher level protection, similar to the makeshift fence, but there are thorns built in. The soak level can be a bit lower than the makeshift fence, however, this fence will damage the player who tries to destroy it from one of the sides. This kind of makeshift fences were used in Africa to keep away predators, and it would make perfect sense to introduce them in Salem.
A bit more detail: the fence has two sides: the inner side is where the players stand when they are building it, and the outer side, which is the opposite. All four sides of the corner posts are thorny. Destroying the fence from the inside is the same as destroying any other fence. Destroying from the outside will cause a certain amount of blood damage with every hit.

Less soak than makeshift fence? With a 50 biles character you destroy a makeshift fence in 2 seconds flat.

Within 1 hour of starting a fresh new character no skills, no nothing, i was able to forage enough goods to buy a P-claim and more. This is of course dependant on spawning location and knowledge of the game, that beind said..

Nothing extra needs to be added imho. Once you have indian tracking, you can turn on forage and will find feathers like hell. From here you can buy a simple claim, and put a stick fence around it.

Neither of those ideas will improve your defense. Braziers and torches are more then enough to help you survive.

5 savage charms is enough to buy a claim, your whole argument is invalid

I didn't argue. I could, but will not.

Now let me throw in some advice here. Do nothing but make money for a bit, all feathers and arrowheads, then buy a claim with it right away. Then grab a few more charms to expand a little, and wall it in. That way if someone does come along and might have interest in hijacking your goods, you won't have anything worth leaving a scent for. After its big enough, running cotton fields is a good way to make residual income that you can use to expand as you go, so you don't have to constantly be on the hunt for silver until your up to the size you want.

Thanks, very good advice indeed. I realised that this is the way to grow, however I feel that this is limiting people somewhat. Also, newbies might not be aware of the importance of Indian Tracking.

What I was aiming for here is a to be able to do bit more than to collect money and hope that no one will rob you while you are logged out in those early stages.
