How about making the items only drop instead of losing them when you die? It's kinda unfair when you lose skills + all items w/o recovery...

Well you didn't die. When you get KO you drop your inventory if i remember right. If you die then it stays and can be looted. I doubt you had anything good so just move on and get back to foraging.

The loss and risk make the reward that much sweeter. =)
As was said, on death your body remains and can be looted with criminal acts. On KO, this is not a possibility because you won't be leaving a corpse behind.

The items do in fact drop where you were KO-d, but you have to be very quick to get them before they despawn.

Seems like 5 minutes is the high end on the safe number. You can certainly make an argument that it should be much longer like 10-15 minutes. I don't think you'd want it much longer than that (or could make it much longer than that) as the time starts exceeding the memory management for maps. Since spawn mechanics are based on maps loading, making them stay resident in memory means things in the area won't respawn as quickly making that work to get these rarer things even harder.

some items stay on the ground much longer than others, I've been ko'ed a few times in my younger days(when I first got small game hunting and thought I could take a cricket). once I got lost trying to find my way back where I was, and was still able to get all my goodies, another time I was right next to my leanto and half my items were gone before I revived...1 item I noticed goes poof almost instantly is berries on a straw, and as thats an essential noob food it probably should stay around a little longer.
