I also feel that is unnecessary. Either porting into Boston with a "stolen" item (that's yours, really, an alt just "borrowed" it so you have a scent on it) or actually putting it in a stall or trade barrel should kill scents. A player receiving said property back should also void the scent. It's not really a "stolen" item anymore if you get it back. Anyone that handles it other than the owner when it counts as stolen should also count as a criminal in some sense, and should at very least be unable to port with it even if they don't leave much if a scent. (To prevent hand offs to alts/village mates.)
The economy needs relatively safe trading, and it was probably never the intention of the devs to let you use allegedly stolen goods as "magic radar tracking beacons", more to follow dirty thieves overland innawoods and settle their hash.
(Maybe it could just be the stalls, but I feel like the intention of a sale is there and you should be able to do risky handoffs that don't risk your character or claim relatively safely too.)
