In my first few days of Salem I was in search of other people desperately (Outside Boston).

Iirc a lock now requires a pig iron bar, this might be cumbersome for a newbie.

In general I noticed lots of stuff being put further away from newbies, like braziers needing wrought iron, yes, you can use TPs, but they need quite a lot of leather for a new player.

Well, at least a new player should be able to get some kind of home pretty fast, that requires a claim, some sort of wall (with an affordable lock!) and maybe some defense.
Maybe different locks for different wall would be a solution.
I am ok with using a pig iron bar for a planked fences lock, I would even be ok with a blister steel bar for a brick walls lock, but a makeshift fence needing an iron bar to become useful is probably not right.

To get a players attention, you want to give him the ability to create. A self made home is a good start, and if it can be enhanced, and yes it can be in many ways, then this is a good thing.
And well, you might want to tell a new player that this can be done.

[edit:]
This might resolve itself with the latest permadeath through diseases, and there are people like our fine doctor who cure those in need, but I guess if a newbie gets infected in town and then dies permanently because of that... might result in a noob quitting.

Its easy for a noob to read the trade winds forum and buy a bar of iron off another player. And I was going to argue the lock thing but changed my mind half way through, it is a pretty important skill, might not hurt to at least lower the preq skills to be able to get it earlier. But I also think there is a window of time where new players should live in a little more danger. Being able to get a p-claim, a fence, and locked gates in the first day sounds a little easy

In contrast, I agree with Taipion on the lock thing. Disregard other aspects, making a fence without a lock is useless, right?
You can make the BB required to open a gate bigger, so that even if we have no lock, the fence won't be completely useless.
Make it like around 50 for makeshift, and higher for others.

Well, if you have a p-claim and a gate with no lock, I can come in and leave clues after I drop a scent opening the gate (vandalism I think?). Otherwise with a lock, I have to break the fence through. Same number of scents except this time its a waste scent.

There is a difference, just not a huge one that would require alot of work, the way I see it anyways. By the time your upgrading your fences, you should already have locksmithing

Edit: also this counts as a hermit problem, being in a town would give you access to someone with locksmithing I'm sure :P

I think JC is talking about the first 30 minutes. We shouldn't talk about lock, iron and stuff here, since if you are noob you won't come that far that quickly.
Noob rarely read forum also, so they may not aware that we actually have people playing the game. They come in, thinking we have a dead game here, gone.
I 100 percents support easier nails and better noob products market ¦]
Also add more reasons for vets to reach out for noobs to buy their stuff. Don't know how but it would be great.
You thought I quit.

I would like to remind people that Locksmithing is off Whittling now. Pretty much RIGHT after you can build your first fence you can make your first lock. Now if players want to invest the 1-2 iron bars to do so, is completely up to them. But I don't think 1-2 pig iron bars is unreasonable for locked gates.
