A few things I have noticed that might turn a new player away:
- Chopping trees for wood blocks: It seems logical that you chop a tree to have wood blocks. Of course, that is the hardest way for a newbie to get them.
- Starting distance: Some never notice the travel to providence option.
- Safe storage: Some never notice that you can store stuff in leantos.
- The jump between Stone & Wood and Iron usage: You need metals for a lot of stuff. Building up a mine, getting ore, building a smelter, etc. is a huge jump. Considering a solo player, it takes ages. Yes, you can buy all that iron and nails, but at the beginning your are basically limited to make charms and sell them. Imho forcing this on a player goes against the idea of the sandbox.
- Fauna: There are just not enough different animals in the game. I think there are as many tree types as animals in the game. A bit of variance and a better fighting scale (something between rabbits and beavers) would help a lot with immersion.
- Outdated info: When looking for information, I always need to consider whether what I am reading is true at the current state of the game. Ie. locksmithing used to work with stones, horticulture increased the gardening yield, etc.
- Diseases
- The lack of any visual effect of using something, ie. Whittling bench.
