I see no reason that 'elite' recipe outcomes need to be limited to having the special ingredient being singular.

The pillow example could work with 1 majestic feather required to give the elite output, all 6 required or even a spectrum of outputs depending on how many majestic feathers were used. Both the player and the game should be able to handle this without any difficulty.

I would recommend that their be only one type of input that uses rare ingredients on each recipe and only one elite output, and I think that having all of the target ingredient being rare is the best way to go as it would encourage stockpiling the rare before crafting.

Here is an example

Normal
Lumber wood Figurine: 3 branches, 1 woodblock, 2 maple leaves
Elite
Tiny Lumber Tim: 3 broken boughs (rare branch), 1 woodblock, 2 maple leaves

3 broken boughs, 1 Singing Old Log, 2 Gold Leaf = Tim, the Enchanter

I believe that 2 gold leaves is insane  but as an option. Even if it should be implemented so not that soon. It'd be enough 2perfect leaves for a first time.

And this- pretty nice addition to the thread but might be harder to implement in first time

Now what would be REALLY fun is if your "Tim the Enchanter" recipe was added but JC didn't tell us so you just had to find them by trying to find em, just as someone said the tried to make this Majestic pillow.

For the first 'round' I would try to do two things
* Give every recipe one elite output that uses rare-drop materials.
* Give every rare-drop which substitutes for normal material one elite recipe usage.

The Tiny Lumber Tim is not going to be a very strong curio, it's a lot better then regular lumberwood figurine though and to someone who is still at the stage when a lumberwood figurine is worth studying the elite version would be a great curio for them and a modest one for an intermediate player. Players should be dabbling with these elite curios all through the course of their development and they can fill the void left by the removal of purity on curios, I think they could also help to revive some trade in finished curios.

P.S. I don't know if it dose already but an elite and normal versions of a curio should count towards the inspiration penalty stacking.

If it'll be so then the hardness of getting those 700 of T&N (for example) would not be so different from a current situation when we already have cotton cloth counted as 0%pure anytime. So I'm pretty against the way you descibe. I'd agree only if it meant to have different curiosities in output (wicker and wicked wicker are pretty different in output, much different in output as well as in appearence so just counted for 2different curiosities).
Then from all above I'd offer to summarise the idea:
1) 2 completely different curiosities in output from 2 unique substitutes(e.g. log/singing log , feather/majestic feather , leather/fine leather, etc.)

2) penalty stacking curiosities in a case of variecy (leaf/perfect leaf/golden "insane" leaf , yellow cotton/indian cotton , etc..) as well as in a case of 1majestic feather aming 5regular feathers)

3)optional - the elite version of a curio in a case of max-luxury materials used (as with a case of mapple mustache mask)
