I think Salem alway will be "harsh". Best thing to do is to walk far away from Boston. If you can, dont walk out of Boston. At least two days worth of playing. You can forage and train on the go and make leantos to "save" your progress.

Right outside of boston

That is majority of your problem right there. a)Plymouth server is full of assholes more than the others because of the stupid 'indians' trying to ruin the game for everybody else, and the server has been opened 3 months longer than the othe two servers. b)Right outside of the capital city is also a very dangerous noob hunting ground on any server.

Learn survival skills and take your free teleport out into the wilderness ASAP.

Like i said the new player experience needs fixing. The tutorial tells you to leave Boston. Well thats the one place in the game where you actually likely to be permadeathed.

The game tells you "leave boston"

then "find or craft inspirationals"

most people will wander off the boston claim trying to find their first inspirational (i did when i was new)

If i need a quick break I will typically just ctrl O and click switch characters. This will take you to the character select screen, allowing you easy reentry to the game world after you come back. As has been stated, this is not a game for the faint of heart, and afking in the wilderness is a great way to lose a character. Also, ensuring that you are adventuring in a location with few other players is also quite important. I would not say, feel safe anywhere withing a few hours of Boston. Using the wilderness guide to start out is a decent way to get somewhere a good distance from the city...

Personally I would have KOed you and taken your (worthless anyway without stats) clothes to demonstrate the lesson if I were a scent leaver. Not everyone chooses to be so nice.

Actually, if you bothered to read the update notes viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2625 you would see that animals no longer attack in Boston. Oh and you know what happened as a result on the very first day? Someone blocked access to the windmills by standing in front of the doors and players no longer had any recourse for dealing with that type of problem. So in order to protect afk'ers from one form of trolling, another form was opened up. Lesson: Be careful what you wish for.
