Anyway, I think that the number of slots should always be lower than the number of different extensions that can be put in them, so we don't wind up with all the houses looking the same again.

Houses really need some kind of defense buff too. The fact that cabinets are the least safe form of storage is kind of ridiculous for their price.

I've always thought: Auto damage equal to 2-3 braziers at 0 coal cost while inside the house.

But yeah... that attached to the house shed idea sounds really awesome. Especially the inside/outside option. It would make cooking a LOT easier if you could have all your cooking implements inside, but an ability to access meat dropoffs without walking back outside (because everyone knows they're too lazy to drop that stuff off inside.)

Oh god I want this now.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

Coal Pit

Postby Shizen » Sat Jan 26, 2013 8:25 am

I thought this had been suggested before, but search failed to find it. The basic idea is simple. Players should be allowed to dig a 2x2 pit to store certain kinds of bulk items which are relatively unaffected by weather, etc. By bulk storage I'm thinking something like 250 units. One shouldn't have to build a cabinet to have a pile of stone, or a pile of coal lying around. This is common at construction sites, etc. and I don't see any reason it shouldn't be introduced in Salem. I know many people use signs for this purpose (for those materials for which that option exists), but that seems like both a kludge to me, and not well modeled (not to mention signs look ugly and do not immediately inform one of their contents which should be apparent from casual observation). Be nice to be able to stack piles of wood too (and have them look like piles of wood).

I'll resist the temptation to talk about being able to fill dirt over the pit, or using this technique to create foundations for buildings and what effect that might have. I'll just say Pits. It's like stone age technology.

It's nice idea.
There was thread about bulk storage in general though: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2646

Merged with older thread.

I do want to say "pits" as storage are, in general, bad. There's a reason they went out with the stone age. Once you are able to build larger structures (like windmills), you have the architectural know-how to build things like silos. (Can I bring up the "grain storage pits" at sites like Machu Picchu?)

A shelf/rack for boards would be lovely. and not to difficult to model. give it 4 looks like the wood box, empty, with a few boards, with a lot of boards, and full. Organization is really nice to have.

This is a pretty neat idea, building specialized storage for certain items. I always like to be organized when I'm hoarding my oiled boards. :D

It would be awesome to be able to build a cache outside. A cache would be used only for the storage of animal carcasses. They despawn if just left on the ground but they take up so much space in storage when butchered so it would be nice to be able to store them whole.

Even better if it's something made of rocks or whatever that's easy to build on the spot. I often go out doing something and suddenly beavers. They're not common in my area so I want to kill them when I can... but then I find I have no room in my inventory and I have to lug the carcass all the way home and when I get back, some or all of the beavers are often gone.

If it was made of stone and had to be destroyed to open it, and could hold one carcass in a single tile space, that would be fun.

Agreed, someone to store dross and whatnot would really help and would be more realistic than just using signposts at the moment

I wouldn't even mind paying a rental fee for storage crates or w/e to some boston npc for these

Sounds like it could be a part of this: http://forum.salemthegame.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3992
I like the idea, though I tend to avoid storing food items (meat). Wouldn't want raiders to come back if they find something useful, such as food.

I like this of bulk storage.

You would interact with them just like a sign post, to quickly move thus item back and forth fast, but in a 2x2 area seems nice.

Dross, Granite, etc, i think should be at least the first to do this, a 2x2 pit with a storage of like 500-1000.
I like the idea of a place to store wood chippings, maybe a new kind of barrel ? which can store upto 500-1000 wood chips.

Thinking of more which are realistic.
