At one time jorb was talking about us being able to craft powder from mining activities. He also wanted to have exploding barrels. Not sure if he actually worked on it and the code is sleeping somewhere or not.

I don't think it is... I too wanted exploding barrels that you set next to walls to help break them down. But my entire raiding system was vetoed. I imagine if we did a gunpowder system it would involve charcoal, finding sulfur somewhere (probably in mines), and extracting nitre from turkey poo and bat guano. I would insist, though, on a mechanic where you have a chance to mix it wrong and it blows up in your face and KOs you at the least. It's really too bad woodblocks don't know where they come from, a bonus could be added for using willow charcoal.

I would suggest you watching Critical Role, in one episode the party encounters a crazy gunpowder seller and it's probably the best impression of a Crazy Pete I've witnessed in my entire life. Can't remember the episode though it was in (or the two episodes). No use for game mechanics but could be fun for the lore ;p.
