They'd need a major downside like witches (leave a scent at every spell, can't go into light, ect.) A priest like character would either have to be practically powerless except for countering witches unless we make it a pain to use them.

We can still have alchemists to counter witch, no?
the alchemists could behave like doctor/researcher/potion maker.
They can roam the lands to learn about flowers/critters/strange things and follow witches to eradicate them... because the witch is violating their law of equivalent exchange (they summon stuff from thin air)
They can learn the inspirationals with an accelerated rate and construct even better inspiration out of butterflies or collections/samples of scientific things.
They can make use of the current "impurity" system in a meaningful way
Etc, etc...

Why do you need a counter to witchs when a majority of people don't even know what they do.

Could have a more gruesome level of alchemist, unlocked by a bit of progress into actual weird ****, a level close to turning lead to gold or something. Would have to be akin to the way witches acquire their skills. And alchemists could just yearn to hunt down witches and disolve them into test tubes to see what makes their magic tick and quantify it into alchymical processes ¦]

"Eye of witch and toe of witch, turn this newt into gold!"

I just don't understand the whole Alchemist vs Witch thing. It doesn't make sense.
