Slavery would be a lot more fun though...

We already have indentured servitude as it is, which is more in keeping with the period.

(I.E. newbs to your village work like mules to earn trust build credit, and eventually get their own land and stuff. but they have to work for it.)

Now, if their was some kind of enforceable contract or mechanic which actually bound them to doing a certain amount of work with game mechanics over and above "gentlemans agreements"... That would be fun. Like, they stay on the town claim or within a certain distance of it the majority of the time for X period, and possibly achieve "X" agreed upon work actions or whatever seems mete.

(I think the staying within certain area is probably the easiest to do, or is it? but if some means of holding a character to a certain amount of work or, in lieu of that, silver paid to the town/master was possible)

I don't see why this should be automated by the game.

Donkey power for the machinery for a maintenance cost (feed) on automated machinery sounds good, and it gives animal husbandry another use.

Well, if people find that having someone be a trial member for a bit and paying their dues works, with the implicit threat of that work being for nothing along with being ostracized and possibly robbed/murdered or remanded to the tender mercies of certain personages on the server is good enough, then maybe it's not necessary. I was just throwing around ideas.

I will allow that just throwing people out and robbing/murdering them yourself or leaving it to someone else might work well enough.
