The No PermaDeath MegaThread

Postby TeckXKnight » Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:48 am

This thread is a merge of all threads previously on the topic. There has been a lot of discussion and there has been a lot of disagreement. By request, these threads have been merged and you may discuss whatever else that you'd like in this thread.

Before going any further know that, unless there is a massive change of heart by the developers, Salem will remain a full PvP, destruction, loot, and perma-death game. These functions are at the core of the game and to remove them is to make the game something else entirely.

Knowing that, keep all discussion in here and, as is expected of all Ideas and Innovations posts, stay civil.

Edit: Developer Thoughts of PvP:

Doing stuff, sorry, ignore this for a sec.

After reading Sevenless's post I have decided not to continue the game.
I am not complaining or about to go off...infact I was greatful for his "hard truth" about what Salem is.

I would also like to add, for those peaceful people like myself, who love a variation of crafting in their game, my suggestion would be to see a future server that is PVE and without perma death.

I've been gaming 17 years and it is extremely hard to find a game that is mostly craft based.
I have only the options of Wurm - horribly bugged even after 8 years or A Tale In The Desert - endless questing.

MMORPG.com and the internet is loaded with gamers like myself and we would gladly use an IM/monthly payment to collect and create and live. And some of your current player's might enjoy a "relaxed mode" some days.

You would* gain a whole new clinet base, if you started a poll in prime areas, such as this forum and major sites like MMORPG, you'd see I am correct.

I'd *love* to play this in a peaceful context.

Good luck to you all, I will check back in hope.

I would also like to see this, I agree with the poster that it would bring a new player base.

I have played Wurm Online, for many years where I was a hardcore pvper. I was a champion of my deity, A God of War, which meant I had 3 lives and then that was it, my character that I had worked on for many years would cease to exist, but I had a choice to do that. Being a leader in the kingdom I was a part of, I was always on the front lines fighting back enemies, sometimes 3:1 odds alongside others in my kingdom. That time is passed me now but i had later moved to the PVE server where I could do whatever i wanted without the thought in the back of my mind that i could wake up to a ransacked village. I could live with that. I could also live with losing items that took me hours to make, or in some cases, i had bought with real life money, which in Wurm, was a common thing to occur because I would provide weapons and armor to those unfortunate enough in the kingdom to die in battle. But i wouldn't be able to play a game where i could walk along with the impending threat of death, knowing that it could be the last time i play on that character, those skills that I worked so hard to get.

So a definite +1 from me because I would play the game if there was this option available.

+1 from me as well.
I love Salem's crafting / building / character development aspects. But I hate PvP and what it brings - griefing, flaming and overlord-wannabes.

But PVE servers are not the intention of devs and will never happen.

For the current state of the game, I agree. It is nearly impossible for a new player to catch up to an older and more established one, and this gap is only going to grow as time passes.

I think a good compromise could be having some middle ground between killing someone and doing nothing to them; something to the tune of losing 10% of your humours and aptitudes. With a separate softcore server and possibly added to the core ruleset.

Ok so no perma death / pvp ?

So what happens when random griefer spawns 10,000 characters and sorounds your base with them ??

What happens when Random griefer puts a PClaim wall around your Pclaim ?

Without perma death/pvp this game would not work, i was the same as you guys at the start when i first joined, i even made threads that non pvp / casual servers would attract tons and tons of players, and i am right as hell, such servers would entice thousands to play, however the servers just WOULD NOT WORK.

I have come to accept this game is very unique, and now i fully understand the games machanics, i understand that non pvp / casual servers just cannot exist if publicly open.

The only way for such servers to exist, would to have privet servers, which you pay for on a monthly basis etc, and only allow your friends to join / play on. You would be the Admin, so you could remove griefers etc etc, this could be a possible solution, maybe you can make a suggestion of privet salem servers ?

I agree with OP, however, I would not play it :)

I can imagine Salem would grow pretty quicky with a PVE server though !

A lot of things could be fixed to match a PVE server, not able to hit eachother, characters can be walked through, not able to build close to eachother,...
If that is too much, just remove the Killing Blow, or change it in a stat-reducing skill.

I have many ideas ¦]

Hey, you misunderstood OP. He does not anywhere mention he doesn't want PvP. It's the permadeath aspect that's (in my opinion, quite rightfully) miffs players.

We've been through this once. Sure, griefers can do that. But considering it would cost them quite a lot silver and effort, as well as bring no profit to them - I doubt they would really do that. There are other games where you could do exactly that and it doesn't happen.

That is because newbies are not aware of it!!!
Today I've spoken with two newbies and when I told them they should teleport or logout in second they saw me... one of them said:
"but I had only grass in inventory that is not a big loss" :!: :!: :|

People are confusing KO with murder and are not aware of murder consequences :!:
